Dr.
Varma - Dentist Tacoma
Dr. Varma grew up in Powell River,
British Columbia. He completed a
Bachelor of Science degree in Cell
Biology at the University of British
Columbia before attending the Marquette
University School of Dentistry. Dr.
Varma graduated from Marquette in 1990
and began the practice of General
Dentistry in Yellowknife, Canada.
Realizing that he wanted to provide his
patients with the highest standards of
comprehensive dentistry, Dr. Varma left
general practice and began a two-year
residency in Prosthodontics at the
Veterans Administration Hospital in
Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Prosthodontics is
the specialty of dentistry, which deals
with complex reconstructive and cosmetic
treatments. Upon completion of his
residency in 1993, Dr. Varma maintained
private practices limited to
prosthodontics in Wisconsin and Ohio. He
was also an associate professor at the
Ohio State University School of
Dentistry.
Dr. Varma returned to the Pacific
Northwest in 1997 and has maintained a
private practice limited to
Prosthodontics in Tacoma, Washington
ever since. He cofounded the Tacoma
Specialty Center for Cosmetic and
Implant Dentistry with Drs. Steffen and
Hinz; board certified oral surgeons. The
specialty center provides a state of the
art team approach to cosmetic and
implant dentistry. At the specialty
center, patients receive the ultimate in
dental treatment in one facility
eliminating the need to travel between
multiple offices.
Dr. Varma and his staff pride themselves

environment. Dr. Varma has a tireless

Dr. Steffen - Dentist Tacoma
Dr. Kerwin L. Steffen received his
dental degree from the University of
Colorado in 1979 graduating Omicron
Kappa Upsilon. He also received the
award for outstanding student in the
basic sciences upon graduation. He then
completed a one year General Practice
Residency at Denver General Hospital
where he advanced his skills in all
aspects of dental treatment including
the restorative aspects of dental
implants, prosthodontics pediatrics,
periodontics, endodontics and advanced
anesthesia training. Dr. Steffen then
completed specialty training in Oral and
Maxillofacial Surgery at Denver General
Hospital.
Dr. Steffen began his private practice
in Washington in 1983. Upon eligibility
in 1986, he became board certified in
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. That
same year he was invited to work in
Saudi Arabia. He spent three years as
part of a team of over 50 dentists
working in several clinics and hospitals
in that country. During his time there,
he served as chairman of a
multidisciplinary pain management
clinic, chairman of the jaw
reconstruction committee and chairman of
the dental implant committee. He was
part of the team that placed the first
dental implants in the Kingdom of Saudi
Arabia.
Dr. Steffen has been practicing and
involved in implant dentistry for over
twenty five years. He worked with some
of the early implant systems when
implant dentistry was in the beginning
stages of development. Dr. Steffen was
invited to attend the first training
program offered to Oral Surgeons that
were in private practice, given by the
Branemark Institute of Gotenberg Sweden.
Professor Branemark is credited with
developing the first osseointegrated
implant that has served as the model for
all of the modern implants produced by
many different companies throughout the
world and are so widely used in
dentistry today.
Dr. Steffen maintains a private practice
in Washington and is one of the founders
of the Tacoma Specialty Center for
Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry. Dr.
Steffen has worked exclusively with Dr.
Ajey Varma, a prosthodontist, for over
ten years. Dr. Steffen and his partner
Dr. Hinz in association with Dr. Varma
opened the implant center in Tacoma to
provide specialty services for patients
in one clinical location. Together they
diagnose and treat a variety of dental
implant cases. These include everything
from single tooth replacement to full
mouth rehabilitation. Together they are
committed to the team concept of patient
treatment, relying on different
specialists bringing their knowledge
together to best serve the needs of the
patient.
Dr.
Hinz - Dentist Tacoma
Dr. Samuel Hinz graduated Cum Laude from
St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN with
a degree in Biology. Dr. Hinz earned his
D.D.S. from the University of Minnesota
in Minneapolis, MN. While there, Dr.
Hinz earned multiple awards and
scholarships for his academic
achievements. Dr. Hinz completed his
advanced training in oral and
maxillofacial surgery at Henry Ford
Hospital in Detroit, MI. He was trained
in full-scope oral and maxillofacial
surgery, with emphasis on complex
maxillofacial reconstruction, surgical
management for obstructive sleep apnea
and dental implant rehabilitation. While
at Henry Ford Hospital, Dr. Hinz
participated in multiple
multidisciplinary teams, including the
Henry Ford Hospital Sleep Rehabilitation
Center, the Henry Ford Hospital Cleft
Lip and Palate Team, as well as the
Henry Ford Hospital Multidisciplinary
Pathology Review Committee.
Dr. Hinz successfully completed the
process of board certification by the
American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial
Surgery at his earliest eligibility as
well as his induction into the American
Association of Oral and Maxillofacial
Surgery. Dr. Hinz combines his expertise
with Dr. Kerwin L. Steffen, a board
certified oral surgeon with over 25
years of clinical experience. Dr. Hinz
and Dr. Steffen cofounded the Tacoma
Specialty Center for Cosmetic and
Implant Dentistry with Dr. Ajey Varma, a
board certified Prosthodontist. Dr. Hinz
offers a wide range of services within
the scope of oral and maxillofacial
surgery including orthognathic surgery,
sleep apnea surgery, maxillofacial
trauma, pathology and dental implant
rehabilitation. As a member of multiple
multidisciplinary dental study
organizations, Dr. Hinz values the
professional relationships with other
dentists and dental specialists in the
management of simple to complex dental
conditions. Credentialed through the
Franciscan Medical Health System and St.
Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma, WA, Dr.
Hinz is able to provide his patients
both inpatient and outpatient surgical
care.
